Buffalo is turning into a city full of kayakers. Ten years ago it was still somewhat of a rarity to see a kayak out on Lake Erie or the Buffalo River. These days it seems as if there are kayaks everywhere – out on the water, on top of cars… I’ve even seen a couple being towed behind bikes.
For those who rely on an ever expanding option of launch points, a new kayak rental facility has opened at the Outer Harbor. Outer Harbor Kayak Rentals is owned and operated by Kathleen Murray, who has set up shop at the Gallagher Beach, part of the Buffalo Harbor State Park. The rental operation is located near Charlie’s Boat Yard and Shanty Shack. This is the first kayak rental outfit to launch at the Buffalo Harbor State Park.
Following is an interview with Kathleen.
What is the breakdown of the rental offerings?
Outer Harbor Kayaks at Gallagher Beach offers single and tandem kayaks in a variety of sizes to accommodate all individuals who want to get on the water. Kayaking at Gallagher Beach is a wonderful opportunity to get on Lake Erie and explore the Outer Harbor including historical and recreation sites. Rates are $20.00/hr. for a single kayak and $30.00/hr. for a tandem. Half days (4 hours) are also available for the more adventurous and those who may wish to spend the day at Gallagher Beach picnicking with friends and family and enjoying the shade of the beautiful pavilions and new children’s park. Half day rates are $50.00 for a single and $75.00 for a tandem.
When did you start the business?
New start up this spring. First weekend was May 21st.
Where are the kayaks located exactly?
We are located on Fuhrmann Blvd just south of the Small Boat Harbor. Our advertising feather flag is visible from the road and we are right along the bike path. I f you know where the jet ski ramp is, then you know where to find us.
Is there a launch?
Kayaks are currently launching off the beach with the assistance of staff. NYS Parks has in its master plan to eventually install a universal launch that is accessible to the handicapped.
How many kayaks are there?
12 to start out with but with room to grow with the demand
Who oversees the operation?
Outer Harbor Kayaks is a Minority and Woman Owned Business and I am the sole proprietor. Outer Harbor Kayaks has a contract with Safe Harbor Development which handles concessions for Buffalo Harbor State Park.
