What’s really cool about seeing the things a person collects is being able to see the passionate behind the collection. It allows a window into what they enjoy doing, the culture they grew up with, and who they are as a person. This is absolutely the case with 1811 Comics and Sweet Jenny’s in Williamsville.
1811 Comics, which I’ve also seen called “The Attic Comic Book Store” because it’s located above Sweet Jenny’s, is a whimsical experience. Walking up the stairs from Sweet Jenny’s into the comic store emanates a similar feeling to Charlie stepping into Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory for the first time. It’s difficult deciding what you want to see first. Life-sized statues of Leonardo, Deadpool, E.T., and Slimer greet you in various locations throughout. Collectable toys, masks of characters, DVDs, comic books, and all sorts of other memorabilia occupy the entire upper floor of this old mill building. 1811 Comics is also one of the few places in the area that I’ve found so far that has some classic arcade games.
It’s clear that the shop’s owners are hugely into various sides of pop culture. Here, it’s not just gaming, or just Star Wars, or even superheroes. Movies and TV shows of all kinds, including Ghostbusters, Gremlins, and the WWE are also celebrated. Some of the walls are lined with autographed photos of the different celebrities the owners have met or who have visited the shop, further showing their love of pop culture.
Right below this incredible comic store is Sweet Jenny’s. Here, they make their own chocolates and ice cream. There’s a pretty large variety of each, with tons of ice cream flavors and types of chocolates. To tie it back to the comic shop side of their business, Sweet Jenny’s even makes and sells chocolates in the shape of iconic pop culture symbols like Pikachu, the Joker, video game controllers, the TARDIS, R2-D2, Winnie the Pooh, and more. Having this special chocolate is like mixing the owners’ passions together in the most wonderful of ways.
It was interesting to see that, based on what’s in the store, the owners clearly are fans of the WWE, superheroes, and other pop culture staples. After visiting this store, it made me contemplate what sorts of things I would have in my own shop based on of my personal passions. It would probably consist of DC Comics, Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars, Gremlins, The Walking Dead, Scott Pilgrim, and several video game franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog.
1811 Comics and Sweet Jenny’s are certainly worth repeat visits to grab some ice cream or other tasty treats, to check out the comic books and other fun surprises upstairs, and to see what special celebrity guests and comic creators stop by.
