Is there anything better than free money? Of course there is, but free money is still pretty awesome.

A new group has arisen in Buffalo that has set out with the intentions to hide cash for others to find. We’re not talking about a couple of bucks here. We’re talking about fifties and hundreds. The exercise in kindness is being called @dashforstash.

“This past Monday, we launched a campaign that is hiding hundreds of dollars worth of cash and prizes daily all over Buffalo,” said an anonymous representative of the group. “This will continue indefinitely, and there is nothing commercial behind it. Our aim is simply to spread love and generosity in a unique and exciting way. Recently especially, news and media seem to be consistently flooded with negativity and tragedy, and we felt this had potential to be a bright spot in our community. So far the responses and reactions have been everything we thought it would be.

After looking at the Dash for Stash Twitter page, it is easy to see just how much fun people are having searching for the cash prizes, all over WNY. There are numerous instances where treasure hunters have reported finding the stashes of cash, thanks to various clues uploaded on the site. The first stash drop was on August 12. Since that time there have been numerous other drops. Looking at the Twitter site, it’s apparent that the group is getting some traction – they even surveil the various drop sites, waiting for the treasure hunters to descend and scavenge about. They have even recorded the searches in progress, before uploading the photos/videos onto Twitter. Some of the drop off locations are obscure, while others are literally hiding in plain sight.

Since launching the Dash, the group has even started to mix things up a bit. They stashed a Bills jersey, and they uploaded an online puzzle (for a $100 cash prize). But mostly these are real life monetary scavenger hunts that are actually solvable. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts… and how many people become engaged with the hunts. It’s definitely something completely different, fun and exciting, and being done for selfless reasons.
